GREETINGS!

Welcome and thank you for your interest in my classes.

My belly dance classes, open to all, are sponsored by the Duval County Community Education Program and offered at Ed White High School, 1700 Old Middleburg Road N. Jacksonville FL 32210. They run concurrent with the regular school year schedule.

I also teach private, semi-private, or customized classes at my private studio by appointment. ALL the information you need concerning the ongoing Community Education classes and my private classes is posted here. There is a lot of information so I am certain you will find answers to your questions, concerns, etc. right here. You will find answers to ALL the questions you may have concerning the current Community Ed schedule, dates, future schedule dates (when available), class descriptions, fees, times, location, registration information, class policies, and a map to the school.

Occasionally Duval County School session dates are subject to change according to adjustments in the Community Education schedule. I will update any changes as I am made aware of them. However, just to make certain, please contact either the school office (693-7640 or 693-7620 ext. 108) or email me (julianne109@hotmail.com) prior to registration for confirmation of the current schedule.

In the FAQ section you will find ALL the details concerning how, when, and where to register, what to wear, what to bring, age limits, classroom and school policy.

If, after reading this entire page your question is not answered sufficiently, please email me at the address above.  I will be happy to provide you with additional details.

HOLIDAYS: The Community Education classes follow the same schedule of regular school dates and holidays.

PLEASE NOTE:  Should inclement weather (storm, storm watches, warnings, etc.) effect our local school attendance policy please  check (or phone) your local TV or radio news stations, or www.duvalschools.org for the status of Duval County Public Schools.

If Duval County Public Schools are closed for regular classes that status DOES APPLY to the Community Education evening classes as well.  If classes are postponed for any reason, arrangements will be made during the term to make up the missed session before the term is complete.

Thank you!

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR CLASSES?

Registration is generally held Monday through Thursday the week before the classes start, between 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm in the school office. You may also register on the first night of class before the class starts. Registration fee can be paid with cash or check made payable to ED WHITE HIGH SCHOOL.

If you choose to register on the first night of classes, please arrive early enough to allow yourself time to register and not miss any of the class which will start promptly at 7:00 pm.

To contact the school for additional information concerning registration or policy please phone 693-7640 or 693-7620 ext. 108.

Office hours are from 1:30 pm to 9:30 pm weekdays.

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHING SHOULD I WEAR?

I suggest you wear something very casual, flexible, and comfortable, similar to what you would wear to work out at the gym. Leotards, leggings, t-shirts, shorts, jeans, etc. are all fine.  This dance is surprisingly more aerobic than one might think....you are going to sweat!  The classes are for fun, exercise and learning, a full costume is not a requirement.  However, if wearing a costume or dance accessories contributes to your personal enjoyment please feel free to dress or accessorize as you wish.

Some dancers like to wear skirts and sashes or scarves tied around their hips, but again, they are not a requirement. I do have a variety of them (and other dance supplies) available for purchase if you are interested in acquiring one.

Keep in mind that the instructor needs to be able to observe the mechanics of your technique and movement in order to offer the best feedback. Therefore,  wearing something that provides an unobstructed view of your torso and especially your knees and legs is your best over all choice.

WHAT KIND OF SHOES SHOULD I WEAR?

Though dancing in bare feet is perfectly fine and acceptable, many dancers like to wear some type of footwear. Ballet slippers, flexible sandals, Isotoner slippers (the kind with suede soles), or even an old pair of socks would work fine for this. If you need more substantial support for your feet, there are a variety of shoes and flexible sneakers available which are especially designed for dancers. I will be happy to provide you with additional information on these upon request.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR TAKING THE CLASSES?

No. There is no age limit for taking the classes. However, PLEASE be aware that the classes are comprised primarily of adults who anticipate enjoying an evening away from the distractions that energetic small children or precocious and bored adolescents may create.

The classes welcome the serious young dancer (of any age) who is disciplined, genuinely interested in learning to dance, and accustomed to dance protocol and classroom etiquette in a primarily adult environment.

DO I NEED ANY DANCE SUPPLIES FOR CLASSES?

There are no preliminary supply requirements for classes. If "props" are going to be used in a particular class, like finger cymbals or veils, I will give you all the necessary details on the first night of classes for where and how to acquire them. I do provide a limited number of "loaner" veils and finger cymbals if you do not want to purchase your own. I do carry a selection of both for sale and will be happy to provide you with additional vendors and suppliers.

CAN MEN SIGN UP FOR CLASSES?

Yes. Though over the years I have had very few men in my classes, male dancers who are serious about learning this dance form are certainly welcome.

WHERE CAN I FIND DANCE MUSIC AND DVDs?

I always make available the practice music CD or provide sources for purchasing the music that I will be using for the class. Upon request, I will be happy to provide you with instructional and performance DVD/video recommendations and resources.

WHERE CAN I FIND DANCE COSTUMES AND SUPPLIES?

I am a vendor of a variety of dance costumes, accessories, and supplies. I will provide details in class or you can email me for more information and resources.

CAN I TAKE PRIVATE LESSONS?

Yes. I do offer private and semi-private lessons by appointment. I also offer custom formatted mini workshops which can be designed especially for your group.

Please email me for details.

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE:

REGARDING CELL PHONES:

This is YOUR time just for YOU!  PLEASE allow yourself the luxury and opportunity to focus and immerse yourself completely for one hour in what could, quite possibly, become one of your most enjoyable experiences ever.  Therefore, unless you are anticipating an important phone call, or you are an "on call" emergency caregiver, or a brain surgeon, etc., PLEASE turn off your cell phone during the class session. THANK YOU in advance for doing yourself, your instructor, and your classmates this enormous courtesy.

* REGARDING YOUNG CHILDREN:

PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUNG CHILDREN WITH YOU TO CLASS.

Unless you have a have a mature young student who is familiar with dance training and is registered for the class with you, please do not bring them to this adult class. Thank you! (See above Re: Age limit)

Experience has proven they will very likely become quickly tired, bored, and restless and predictably will create an annoying and embarrassing distraction which will affect the entire class. Most ladies in these classes have arranged for time away from their daily obligations and are anticipating an evening to focus on themselves far removed from family distractions.

Trust me, your investment in a babysitter for this short period of time is one in which YOU will reap the benefits.

REFUND POLICY:

Community Education Program Classes

Request for refund must be made to the Community School within three (3) business days of the 1st class.

THANK YOU!
